Getting Started:
Creating your own style sheet
Priya Visavadia – 24 March 2021
What do you usually do when you write a document? Presumably, you make a plan, write down your ideas, and get cracking, but have you ever thought about using your own style sheet? If not, it might be something to consider.
A style sheet is what editors will typically use to ensure documents are written in a consistent and clear manner. Having your own style sheet will help you save a few extra bucks if you can’t afford to have your document professionally edited. They are simple, effective, and will certainly give your document more structure and shape.
So, what can you add to a style sheet? We’ve created a template for you (download here), which you can fill in according to your own preferences and style.
Tip! For academic texts, we recommend you bear the following in mind:
1. Never use contractions
It is it’s, will not won’t, do not don’t, etc.
2. Place adverbs within the verb
The discussion of the results will then follow. Then the discussion of the results will follow.
3. Avoid colloquial, wordy phrases
E.g. Fear is inevitable. Fear is a feeling that we cannot avoid even if we try.
